Director of Translational Research and Development

The Director of Translational Research and Development will lead a cross-functional team in the development and execution of early-phase translational studies (internal IRB-approved studies, blood/sweat comparisons of drug metabolism/pharmacokinetics, localized on-body sweat stimulation, and early stage device testing) to inform applications of sweat sensors for medication monitoring applications. The scope of work ranges from physiology studies and sweat discovery through product-development testing and research utilizing Eccrine’s technologies.

Location:  Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Duties Include:

  • Lead a talented multidisciplinary discovery team tasked with expanding our knowledge of sweat physiology and the capability of our sensor technologies in a manner that is consistent with the company's goals of becoming a leader in non-invasive, real-time, medication monitoring in sweat.

  • Provide technical expertise in the development of human subjects protocols, tools, techniques, and ex-vivo molecular and biochemical assays to maximize our understanding of sweat sample collection methods and the dynamics by which molecules, ions, and pharmacological agents are secreted in human sweat.

  • Develop and execute early human translational studies, discovery efforts, and internal IRB-approved studies to safely optimize iontophoresis based sweat stimulation and explore other stimulation methodologies.  

  • Build strategic operational plans for translational discovery and development programs that are aligned with R&D and commercial goals. Collaborate with executive leadership to define and execute a research strategy based on corporate objectives and priorities.  

  • Develop and utilize external networks and relationships to drive research collaborations expanding sweat sensing applications.

  • Serve as a strong scientific advocate and founding researcher in the nascent field of Eccrinology.  Represent Eccrine Systems at industry, academic, government, and medical conferences by giving talks, submitting papers, and presenting original research.   

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  •  MD/PhD or PhD in a relevant scientific area (ex: biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, chemistry, biology) with experience in leading discovery and development programs.

  • Outstanding record of innovative contributions to translational science with demonstrated ability to develop and use strong science (preclinical/early translational research) to guide strategic direction.

  • Experience writing, reviewing, executing human subjects protocols for early translational studies in medical device, pharmaceutical, or biomarker discovery areas.

  • Broad knowledge of molecular assays, drug pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, and medical device experience preferred.  

  • Demonstrated success leading, motivating, and collaborating with team members of diverse backgrounds and expertise is a must.

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex data and results to various stakeholders including: clinicians, technical team leaders, and senior management required.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully influence internal and external cross-functional teams by promoting creative problem solving, effective cross-functional planning and execution, clear decision-making, and accountability.

  • Demonstrated research interests with alternative biofluids such as sweat, saliva, respiratory fluid, or tears (preferred).

  • Working knowledge of clinical protocols and regulatory processes

  • Excitement about the vision and mission of Eccrine Systems.
